Information for Exchange Students – Health Insurance

A valid health insurance is compulsory for all students in Germany. It means that you as an exchange student must also submit a proof of sufficient health insurance, to be enrolled at Bochum University of Applied Sciences. The enrolment without health insurance is not possible!

As a rule, you must take out health insurance with one of the German health insurance companies. There are a few cases, when the health insurance from your home country can be recognised:

Students from EU countries

If you have a statutory health insurance in your home country, you need to send a copy of your European Health Insurance Card to the International Office together with your other enrolment documents. An insurance from a German health insurance provider will not be required.

Please note that you must clarify with your health insurance provider in your home country, which services will be covered abroad.

Students from Turkey

If you have a statutory health insurance in your home country, you must apply in advance for insurance certificate from the health insurance provider (Form A/T11). This certificate must be sent to the International Office together with your other enrolment documents.

Other health insurance from your home country

Can be only recognised, if it corresponds to the minimum benefits provided by the German statutory health insurance. As a rule, the coverage of foreign health insurances (especially from Non-EU countries) is not enough for the exemption. But you can have it checked, if you send the confirmation of your health insurance to a German statutory health insurance company.

In the case that your health insurance is recognised, for your enrollment we require an electronic notification of your insurance status (M10) from a German statutory health insurance provider. Upon your request, they can send us the required notification. For the Bochum University of Applied Sciences the code H0000683 has to be indicated.

You can find a list of the most popular statutory health insurance providers in Bochum below.

If the health insurance from your home country is not recognised, you must take out a German health insurance. There are two kinds of health insurance in Germany: statutory and private.

Statutory Health Insurance

If you are younger than 30 and/or if you have not studied for longer than 14 semester (7 years), you can apply for a statutory health insurance for students. It will cost around 110 EUR monthly (at all health insurance companies). With the statutory health insurance you are well secured. It covers mostly everything, like visits to doctors, treatments, operations etc.

You can find a list of the most popular statutory health insurance providers in Bochum below.

Private health insurance

You can take out the insurance from one of the private health insurance providers in Germany. The basic coverage of the private health insurance can be sometimes cheaper but you should keep in mind the following:

  • The coverage of such insurances can be sometimes limited
  • Normally (pre-)payment is necessary which will be reimbursed later.
  • The costs of a private health insurance depend on your health history, age and the services you choose.
  • As soon as you have taken out private health insurance in Germany, you will not be allowed to change to a statutory health insurance during your studies.

We recommend to take a statutory health insurance.

A private insurance coverage will only be recognised if it corresponds to the minimum benefits provided by the German statutory health insurance. For that reason, the private health insurance confirmation must be presented to a German statutory health insurance agency.

In the case, the insurance is recognised, the statutory provider must send an electronic notification of your insurance status (M10) to Bochum University of Applied Sciences. For our university the code H0000683 has to be indicated.

Statutory health insurance providers in Bochum:

You can contact one of them from your home country to sign up for the health insurance in time. You can be enrolled, as soon as the insurance provider sends an electronic notification of your insurance status (M10) to Bochum University of Applied Sciences. For our university the code H0000683 has to be indicated.
