SUMMARY:International Satellite Conference: The Role of Community Rese
arch in the Context of Health Crises
DESCRIPTION:Some events will also take place as part of the Community
Health Konferenz in Bochum on 19 (and 20) November 2026.\n\nOn 18 and
19 November\, the international satellite conference “The Role of Co
mmunity Research in the Context of Health Crises” will take place at
Bochum University of Applied Sciences.\n\nThe conference brings toget
her international academics\, community researchers and activists from
Peru\, Brazil\, Canada and Europe to discuss the role of community re
search in promoting health equity and addressing health crises.\n\nBui
lding on over ten years of international collaboration and community r
esearch to combat health inequalities\, in which many of the key parti
 cipants (Birn\, A.E. 2025\,&nbsp\;Falge\, C./Betscher\, S.: 2024\,&nbs
 p\;Hartung\, S.\,/Bär\, G.: 2025) have been involved\, the conference
highlights the transformative potential of community-oriented\, parti
cipatory approaches to managing health crises\, which have long been e
stablished in many regions of the Global South and in Canada.\n\nIn di
alogue with researchers\, activists and community researchers from the
Global South\, we will explore South-North and South-South exchanges
on community research\, community health and health equity (Ventura et
al. 2024) and address key gaps in healthcare provision (level of care
 \, paradigmatic approaches\, accessibility\, sensitivity to diversity/
community participation\, etc.) in European countries. Guided by a non
-extractivist and power-critical approach\, international case studies
will focus on community mobilisation\, decentralised policy-making an
 d community-based healthcare.\n\nThe conference offers a space for int
erdisciplinary exchange\, networking and practical know-how among part
icipants from Peru\, Brazil\, Canada and Europe. A particular highligh
t will be the dialogic keynote ‘Dialogue across disciplines and cont
inents for health equity’ by researchers and activists Prof. Deisy V
entura (University of São Paulo\, Brazil) and Prof. Anne-Emanuelle Bi
rn (University of Toronto\, Canada)\, which will take place at KoFabri
k Bochum\, a community space for social innovation\, activism and coll
aborative work. Another key item on the programme is a visit to the Ci
ty Lab at Bochum University of Applied Sciences and the Querenburg Com
munity Health Centre\, where participants will gain practical insights
into how community research helps to shape solidarity-based health st
ructures and work directly with local stakeholders.&nbsp\;&nbsp\;\n\nR
