Bachelor of Science in Civil Engineering (BSc)

Excellent career prospects: Thanks to their compact studies and strong practical focus, graduates of universities of applied sciences are particularly in demand in civil engineering.

The tasks of a civil engineer encompass the entire built environment that surrounds us as well as its complex infrastructure. This makes civil engineering more diversified than hardly any other profession.

Within this programme, UAS_BO aims to combine the many facets of civil engineering with professional and practical training, in order to qualify students for leading positions in the construction industry or for further academic studies.

Career prospects

Civil engineers are responsible for the construction and maintenance of infrastructure, without which living conditions on this planet would be far less pleasant:

  • No healthy life with drinking water and refuse disposal
  • No transport on public roads, railway tracks, rivers or at airports
  • No safe and environmentally friendly energy supply
  • No protection from earthquakes, storms and floods
  • No safe living and working in the buildings planned by civil engineers in cooperation with architects (Excerpt from: 'The Responsibility and Reputation of Civil Engineers – An Appeal', Dr. Klaus Stiglat et al., Karlsruhe, September 2006)

Professional prospects in vocational teaching
For students who attend courses at the Teacher Training Centre of UAS_BO in parallel to their bachelor’s programme, there is additionally the possibility to become a teacher (in certain circumstances with civil servant status) at a vocational training college. This is conditional on a subsequent master’s degree programme, which can be completed at the University of Wuppertal.

Admission conditions

Higher education entrance qualification

For admission to this degree programme you must hold one of the following qualifications:

  • Higher education entrance qualification for universities of applied sciences (Fachhochschulreife)
  • General higher education entrance qualification: German Abitur
  • An entrance qualification recognised as equivalent

In the case of the entrance qualification for universities of applied sciences, a differentiation is often made between the academic part and the practical part. The academic part is completed at school. The practical part can be a completed training course (e.g. apprenticeship) or a 6 or 12-month guided work placement. As a rule, which type of work placement you require in order to be entitled to study is indicated on your certificate. If you are unsure, please contact your school.

If you have obtained your entrance qualification for universities of applied sciences in a federal state other than North Rhine-Westphalia, please check your certificate to see if it is also valid here.

Subject-related work placement:

  • 8-week work placement on a construction site

Proof that the 8 weeks have been completed must be produced by the start of the 3rd semester of the programme.

Possible areas:

  • Earthworks
  • Timber construction
  • Masonry
  • Concrete and reinforced concrete construction
  • Carpentry
  • Joinery

Programme structure

The standard period of study is 3.5 academic years (7 semesters) including the bachelor’s thesis. Students who pass the examination are awarded the degree of Bachelor of Science (BSc).

The programme is modularised. It comprises foundation modules in the first and second year of the programme, which teach the necessary fundamentals of civil engineering. The third year is divided into foundation modules and elective modules.

Core contents of the BSc in Civil Engineering:

  • Structural mechanics and construction methods
  • Design and dimensioning
  • Foundation engineering and environmental technology
  • Building materials and building physics
  • Construction and building law
  • Construction management
