Local Tips for Bochum

  • Bochum Stadtpark & Tierpark

The oldest landscape park in the Ruhr area, featuring a Bismarck tower and a compact zoo with a great Fossilium (aquarium and fossils). A perfect contrast to the industrial image—lush, peaceful, and historic.

Pro tip: combine with the visit to the art museum (Kunstmuseum), which is only a 5-minute walk from the Stadtpark. Or look for the “Milchhäuschen” tucked away in the park. This charming, historic pavilion is the perfect spot to grab a coffee or an ice cream.

  • Planetarium Bochum

One of the most advanced planetariums in Europe, located near the Stadtpark. It offers immersive shows about the universe that are visually stunning even if you don't speak German.

Pro tip: Check for “MusikShows” (like Queen or Pink Floyd) for a language-barrier-free experience.

  • Botanical Garden at the Ruhr University

Located right at the Ruhr University and within a walking distance from Hochschule Bochum. It is an oasis of biodiversity, where you can travel from the humid rain forests of South America to the arid landscapes of Africa in just a few steps.

Pro tip: The Chinese Garden is a hidden gem for a quiet walk between sessions.

  • Bermuda3eck

The most famous nightlife district in the region with over 60 bars and restaurants in one square mile. It’s where the city comes alive at night.

Pro tip: You must try the "Currywurst" at Bratwursthäuschen; it is a local cult favorite.

Short trips in the area

  • Hattingen Old Town

A charming town just 20-30 minutes away with a perfectly preserved medieval Old Town. It feels like stepping into a fairy tale, just minutes away from the industrial sites.

Pro tip: Take the Tram 308 from Bochum Hbf; it’s a scenic ride that takes you directly to the heart of Hattingen.

  • Zollverein UNESCO World Heritage (Essen)

A former coal mine turned into a world-class architecture and design site. It is often called "the most beautiful coal mine in the world" and is a UNESCO site. It’s huge and iconic.

Pro tip: Rent a bike on-site to explore the vast grounds

  • Lake Kemnade (Kemnader See)

A large reservoir on the Ruhr river located on the southern edge of Bochum. It is a go-to spot for locals to cycle, skate, or relax by the water.

Pro Tip: Visit the Haus Kemnade, a moated castle near the lake, for a touch of aristocratic history.
