What makes HS Bochum special – the advantages
Practical learning helps in your studies and career
The practical orientation of the Bochum University of Applied Sciences is particularly noteworthy: not only because of the many student projects and practical training, practical placements, internships, but also because the professors themselves are very practice-oriented:
Our university lecturers previously worked in other professions. Thanks to their diverse professional experience, they have extensive specialist knowledge that students can benefit from. They also make the course content easier to understand by linking it to personal examples. This approach facilitates understanding and promotes the sustainability of what students have learned.
“The transition from school to university isn't always easy. But at BO, you get a lot of support through exercises, tutorials, and office hours.”
(Mechanical engineering student Lakish; 6th semester)
Facts
The Bochum University of Applied Sciences offers a practice-oriented and innovative course of study with short study periods and training geared toward future careers.

We promote the quality of our teaching and encourage lecturers to use alternative and didactically meaningful teaching and examination formats such as inverted classrooms, problem- and challenge-based learning, research-based learning, etc. This in turn provides significant support to our students and promotes learning success.
Applied research, as practiced at the University of Applied Sciences Bochum, contributes to social progress. A special element of applied research at the University of Applied Sciences Bochum is its interdisciplinary nature. This is evident in facilities such as the Institute for Building Information Modeling (BIM Institute) and the Interdisciplinary Institute for Applied AI and Data Science Ruhr (AKIS). These research institutes stand for holistic and interconnected learning and research, enabling us to better solve the challenges of the future.
Cooperation with external partners (transfer) is highly valued at the University of Applied Sciences Bochum. We maintain many regional and international networks with business associations and other universities. In this context, our students benefit from a wide range of suitable projects, practical training, practical placements, internships, stays abroad, excursions, and topics for final theses that have a direct practical relevance.
Diversity

We differ, for example, in age, sex and gender, disability, social or cultural background, worldview, or in terms of our living circumstances. What we have in common is that we want to be productive and successful in our studies and professional activities at our university.
Sustainable university

Sustainability is firmly anchored in all areas of the Bochum University of Applied Sciences: in studies, teaching, research, and daily operations. Our goal is to make campus life sustainable through the responsible use of resources, the promotion of democratic values, and a broad understanding of diversity.

International affairs and internationalization are important to us. In order to prepare our students for international working conditions during their studies, we have established a large network with other international universities. Our International Office is happy to support stays abroad.
