DFG funds the establishment of a laboratory for digital craftsmanship at the university

"CoBotCraftLab" - A new large-scale device, planned by professors from the Departments of Architecture and Mechatronics and Mechanical Engineering

Robotics in the skilled trades? In professions where practical skills, dexterity and very concrete experience are often key qualifications? "Yes, yes!" agreed architects Prof Sven Pfeiffer and Prof Erhard An-He Kinzelbach together with robotics professor Dr Daniel Schilberg from the Department of Mechatronics and Mechanical Engineering. And so they developed an interdisciplinary vision of a production cell for the building trade in which man and machine would work together in a new way. This is to be called "CoBotCraftLab - Laboratory for Human-Robot Collaboration and Digital Craftsmanship".

They were thinking about old techniques such as screwless assembly, but also the automated use of tools such as drills and milling machines to produce complex components. And this idea also gave rise to numerous research questions on the way to solutions for such tasks:

  •     To what extent are robotic processes capable of replicating conventional manual processes, reanimating traditional techniques and transferring
        and scaling them to construction processes?
  •     Can shared workspaces (in the same room and at the same time) be designed by craftspeople and robots that enable the efficient manufacture
        of construction products, e.g. built-in elements in residential construction?
  •     How are occupational safety and ergonomics requirements changing in the context of digital craftsmanship and demographic change?
  •     How can the existing gap between human experience and the precision and speed of robotics be closed in the context of construction
        processes?
  •     Can collaborative human-robot interactions be used for dismantling and analytical sorting processes in addition to the synthesising function in
        the sense of a future circular construction economy?

In order to answer these questions, the scientists have planned a 7 metre long and 3 metre wide production cell with six collaborative robots (cobots) that are mounted on linear axes. They are to be equipped with tool changing systems with application-specific or generalist manipulators. The overall system has 42 degrees of freedom of movement and should be able to perform a wide range of automatable tasks in the construction industry.

In the centre area between the axes carrying the cobots, people should be able to move around to interact with the robots.

The researchers in Bochum have received funding approval for this large-scale device, which is estimated to cost just over 900,000 euros in total (funding code INST 234/14-1), from the German Research Foundation's Major Instrumentation Programme for Universities of Applied Sciences 2023. Congratulations!

Digi Fellow 2023

TransCo Project

Duration: 01.01.2023 - 31.03.2024

How does an object get from A to B and what does it look like there? It should be moved by 500 mm but my system only has swivel joints. How can I move linearly with rotations only? Students in technical subjects have to deal with the solutions to such questions. However, this is not only relevant to their studies, as people can move along a line and extend their hand in a straight line, even though the human body only has swivel joints and not a single linear axis. This is solved by coordinate transformations carried out by computers or the spinal cord. These coordinate transformations pose a challenge for many a Cartesian view of the world. The TransCo game is designed to help students get a better idea of how bodies and their movements in space can be described.

Lukas Fröbus is honoured by the VDI for his bachelor thesis

Mr Lukas Fröbus was honoured by the VDI for his outstanding bachelor thesis "Development and application of a Product Development Process for Data-driven solutions in Manufacturing", which he wrote during his year abroad at Tongji University at ruhlamat Automation Technologies (Suzhou) Co, Ltd. The work was supervised by Prof. Schilberg and the stay abroad took place as part of the CDHAWs programme. The work is a very good example of the implementation of Industry 4.0 in existing structures. We would like to congratulate Mr Fröbus on this success.


Keynote at the RIACT 2021

The institute will once again be represented at RIACT in Chennai with a keynote speech on current topics in robotics. Prof Dr Daniel Schilberg has been invited as keynote speaker.


RWTH Certificate for Teaching and Learning Innovation Grants

Prof Dr Daniel Schilberg has received a certificate for innovation in teaching for his project IGEL - Interactive large-scale events for excellent teaching. The project focussed on activating teaching and learning in events with more than 1000 students.


IOP Conference Series: Materials Science and Engineering

As co-editors (eds. Dr Arockia Selvakumar Arockia Doss, Professor Dr Daniel Schilberg), the Institute is pleased to announce that the RIACT 2020 Conference Proceedings have been published in the IOP Conference Series: Materials Science and Engineering VOL 1012 (2021). Henning Knauer receives the prize of the German Mechatronics Society for his outstanding Master's thesis.

Mr Henning Knauer was awarded the "Deutsche Gesellschaft für Mechatronik e.V." prize for his Master's thesis at the Mechatronics Faculty Day on 4 December 2020.

Excerpt from the award:

"...[It] can be stated that Henning Knauer successfully dealt with a very challenging topic in his master's thesis. His very structured scientific approach can also be emphasised by his extensive literature research, clearly structured tables and figures and a very well-documented methodological approach. The overall linguistic standard of the Master's thesis is appealing. Mr Knauer's explanations fully meet all the requirements that should be placed on such a thesis. ...

The results of the thesis were summarised in a paper "Developing a Reinforcement Learning Agent for the Game of Checkers" and submitted for review at the 11th International Conference on Applied Human Factors and Ergonomics (AHFE 2020), where it underwent a peer-review process and was selected for publication at the conference in San Diego, California, USA, July 16-20, 2020..."


Contribution at the REM 2020 in Krakow

This year, the 21st International Conference on Research and Education in Mechatronics (REM) in Krakow was held purely digitally. The Institute of Robotics and Mechatronics was represented with the topic "Analysing the influence of suspension parameters to reduce motion sickness in vehicles".

The institute will be represented with a paper at the 11th International Conference on Applied Human Factors and Ergonomics (AHFE 2020) in San Diego in 2020.


Keynote speech at the RIACT 2020 of the Vellore Institute of Technology

The main objective of this virtual International Conference on Robotics, Intelligent Automation and Control Technologies (RIACT 2020) is to provide a virtual platform for researchers and practitioners to present and share the latest developments in the fields of robotics. RIACT 2020 will include presentations on the latest research on artificial intelligence, nanorobots, swarm robotics, image and speech processing, underwater robotics, agricultural robotics, aerial robotics and military robotics. This conference will bring together an outstanding group of plenary speakers from around the world on various topics in robotics and automation.


Henning Knauer speaks at the 11th International Conference on Applied Human Factros and Ergonomics

The AHFE 2020 took place virtually this year from 16-20 July. Mr Henning Knauer represented the Institute of Robotics and Machatronics (IRM) with his contribution Developing a reinforcement learning agent for the game of checkers (Henning Knauer, Andrea Dederichs-Koch, Daniel Schilberg).


Excursion to the Mercedes plant in Düsseldorf February 2020

Students of sustainable development (engineering specialisation) and mechatronics went on an excursion to the Mercedes Sprinter production facility in Düsseldorf as part of Prof. Schilberg's technical mechanics course.

Students explore Shanghai and Beijing

In October and November 2019, the Institute organised a 10-day excursion to Shanghai and Beijing together with Prof. Dr rer. nat. Claudia Frohn-Schauf and Prof. Dr.-Ing. Clemens Faller and 18 students from various disciplines. There they visited our partner university, Tongji University, companies and cultural and historical highlights.


Invited Speech at the SRC 2020, Fukuoka

International Smart Robot Conference (SRC-2020) will be held in Fukuoka, Japan, during April 22-24, 2020. SRC-2020 is an International Platform to Rethink the New Generation Robotics, to Present Research Frontier of Future Robots and to Harmonize International Collaborations in Robot Economy.


Presentation at the 2nd International Conference on Human Systems Engineering and Design: Future Trends and Applications (IHSED 2019), Universität der Bundeswehr München, Munich, Germany September 16-18, 2019

Mr Tim Straßmann will be presenting at the IHSED in Munich on his paper: Development of a Concept for the Use of Humanoid Robot System: the Example of a Logistic Support Process at the Mercedes-Benz Plant Duesseldorf (Tim Straßmann, Anna-Lena Wurm, Daniel Schilberg, Germany).


Excursion to the Schaeffler plant in Wuppertal (Sep 19)

Students of Sustainable Development (specialising in engineering sciences) went on an excursion to the Schaeffler plant in Wuppertal as part of Prof. Schilberg's Machine Elements course. The plant has an eventful history of over 100 years and an exciting present. Almost every high-speed train in the world runs on Schaeffler rolling bearings. Even though trains are an important component in sustainable mobility, the students recognised opportunities for optimisation.


Institute of Robotics and Mechatronics at DEMAG's 200th anniversary celebrations in Wetter

The OPTIMUM Project was also presented as part of DEMAG Cranes' 200th anniversary celebrations in Witten, with the Institute of Robotics and Mechatronics supporting the presentation with one of its robots.


Invited Speech at the WCR 2019, Shenyang

 

The 4th World Congress of Robotics 2019 (WCR-2019) was held in Shenyang, China during August 31-September 1, 2019. Initiated from 2015, WCR-2019 aims to strengthen the technical and business ties in robotic and AI industries, and provide a stimulating platform for researchers, scientists, engineers and practitioners to present their latest research findings, ideas, developments and applications in all aspects of robotics.

The conference city, Shenyang –capital city of Liaoning Province, enjoys about 7200-year history of human activities and 2300-year history of urban development and it is the largest city in Northeast China, as well as the political, economic and cultural center of Liaoning Province. As a significant city in Northeast China with abundant resources, Shenyang has made great efforts to provide good lodging, dining, transportation and recreation for visitors from all over the world.


Mechatronics student Sophie Charlotte Keunecke wins bronze at the World Championship of Professions
Bronze für Sophie Charlotte Keunecke

Bachelor student Sophie Charlotte Keunecke (23) competed as a robot system integrator at Worldskills in Kazan (Russia) from 22 to 27 August 2019. The task was to programme an industrial robot and set up a robot-based assembly system for Matryoshka dolls. Together with their team partner Thomas Haag (FANUC Germany, cooperation partner of Prof Schilberg's Institute of Robotics and Mechatronics), the two ultimately came out on top and won bronze for Germany!

The Worldskills (World Championship of Skilled Trades) takes place every two years around the globe. More than 1,350 skilled workers from over 60 nations, who were honoured in their home countries, competed against each other in over 56 different professions. The skill "Robot System Integration" was included as a Future Skill for the first time this year.


Student Ann Kathrin Stinder gives a lecture in Washington D.C.

On behalf of the Institute of Robotics and Mechatronics at Bochum University of Applied Sciences, student Ann Kathrin Stinder presented the results of her project study in the Sustainable Development degree programme to an international audience at the 10th International Conference on Applied Human Factors and Ergonomics in Washington D.C., USA.

The article "How Can Robotics Be Integrated into the Field of Care and Acceptance by the Population for the Use of Artificial Intelligence Be Strengthened?" was published by the authors (Ann Kathrin Stinder, Alexander-Maximilian Frische and Daniel Schilberg) in the Springer book Advances in Human Factors in Training, Education, and Learning Sciences (ISBN 978-3-030-20134-0) in the Advances in Intelligent Systems and Computing series. The lecture was a complete success.


Luke Mockridge and Brainpool TV as guests

Luke Mockridge and Brainpool TV were guests at Bochum University of Applied Sciences on 4 July. They needed the support of Prof Dr Daniel Schilberg, Department of Mechatronics and Mechanical Engineering, Institute of Robotics and Mechatronics, for their filming. The result will be shown in autumn.


IMEP 2019

...and another successful IMEP 2019 in Mechelen (Belgium) has come to an end. The participants learned a lot about robotics and machine vision during the international cooperation, but also about the working methods of our Belgian neighbours.


Can robots replace people in care?

This was the question posed by the two-semester project study on the integration of artificial intelligence in the field of care, which focussed on acceptance research. It contributes to showing the direction in which robot development could go here.

Ann Kathrin Stinder, student of Sustainable Development, presented her results on 28 February 2019 in Dresden. Robotics professor Dr Daniel Schilberg was actively involved in the project over the two semesters. The study will also be presented internationally in the summer. Stinder will then give a presentation at the AHFE19 (10th International Conference on Applied Human Factors and Ergonomics) in Washington D.C.


VDI prize for outstanding master's thesis

Marco Dinges, a graduate of the Mechatronics course, was honoured by the VDI Bochum District Association on 15 February 2019 for his outstanding achievements in his master's thesis on "Development of a navigation algorithm for optimal path planning for autonomous electric vehicles", which he completed at Bertrandt in Essen. In addition to the certificate, Mr Dinges received prize money of €300 and an annual membership of the VDI.

Excursion to the Mercedes plant in Düsseldorf (Feb 19)

Sustainable development students (specialising in engineering sciences) went on an excursion to the Mercedes Sprinter production facility in Düsseldorf as part of Prof. Schilberg's technical mechanics course.

They identified a number of opportunities to get involved in the future with a view to optimisation potential with regard to #sustainability.


External Examiner University of Limerick September `18

Prof Schilberg was involved as an external examiner in the review process for the Master of Engineering in Mechatronics degree programme at the University of Limerick in Ireland. The review examined whether the course meets the new requirements of digitalisation and the practical orientation demanded by industry. The degree programme fulfils these requirements very well.
