On November 12, the first status meeting of our DFG-funded FIP-project (A calibrated and virtual multiscale wave measurement laboratory to enhance and complement flow measurements: From basic research to industrial application, DFG project FIP 61/1-528740160) took place at Bochum University of Applied Sciences, marking one year of project progress.
Throughout the full-day meeting, the team presented the current results centered on the measurement and simulation of flow processes. The project fosters interdisciplinary collaboration between fluid mechanics, mathematics, and geophysics, bringing together expertise from multiple scientific domains within the university.
At the heart of the research lies the 18-meter-long flume in the Hydraulic Engineering Laboratory, where different measurement systems – including Particle Image Velocimetry (PIV) and Acoustic Doppler Current Profiling (ADCP) – are tested and compared to capture various flow conditions and multiphase flow phenomena. These laboratory studies are complemented by field measurements and numerical simulations.
It was impressive to see how the international team of PhD students and postdocs has grown together over the first year, and how many scientific contributions in the form of conference papers and journal publications have already emerged.
