Land Surveying

"Müller takes the shot, the ball goes in, and Goal!" Or is it? Goal-line technology in football has more to do with monitoring a dam than it might seem. In both cases, a high level of precision is required. Virtually everything around us can be spatially captured. Whether it's determining a location or measuring various dimensions – all of this is surveying. The Bachelor's degree program in Land Surveying provides an excellent foundation and skills to independently capture, analyze, and present spatial data.

Surveying engineers employ various measurement methods such as drones, laser scanners, satellites, or traditional total stations for capturing spatial data. The fundamental principle is that  Land Surveying is crucial for any type of spatial assessment – both today and in the future – creating a future-proof field of work.

Digitalization and technological progress make  Land Surveying, as well as studying it, dynamic and adaptable. As the only University of Applied Sciences in North Rhine-Westphalia offering a Bachelor's degree program in  Land Surveying, you will acquire the necessary knowledge and extensive skills in the practice of engineering surveying, optical 3D measurement technology, or cadastral surveying in small learning groups.

In the first two semesters, you will study the fundamentals of Land Surveying together with your peers from geoinformatics. Later on, you'll learn to process, analyze, and visualize the data you've obtained using software. Diverse subjects such as cartography and topography, real estate valuation, sustainable land management, and urban land-use planning are part of your study plan.

You will learn to flexibly apply geodetic methods through practical projects, and in the first year of study, you will work with state-of-the-art measurement instruments. With a completed surveying degree, diverse fields of work await you. Starting from the fifth semester, you can set individual priorities according to your preferences and personal career goals, paving the way for your own professional path.

What type of career are you? Private sector, career as a civil servant, self-employment or would you prefer research? With a degree in Land Surveying, all paths are open to you - with particularly good job opportunities on the German and international labour market.

As a surveying engineer...
  • You occupy an important profession in the construction industry - be it in road construction at Straßen.NRW, in urban land-use planning for cities or private construction companies and, for example, in tunnelling in Switzerland.
  • You will determine data with the utmost precision in industry. In the aircraft, ship and automotive industries, for example, the smallest deviations in components that affect the statics and therefore the safety of a means of transport must be prevented.

  • You support the crime scene investigation with your highly accurate working methods.

  • You can dedicate yourself to research and, for example, measure glacier movements by satellite or on board a research vessel such as the "Polarstern".

  • You use space probes to lift off from Earth and map the surfaces of other planets in space travel.

Full-time only, co-operative with a company or full-time plus?

Would you like to concentrate fully on your studies or are you keen to gain professional experience and complete the preparatory service for a career as a civil servant? Then you have two options:

KIA Land Surveying

Apprenticeship plus degree programme - not one after the other, but in parallel. The KIA concept combines vocational training in surveying technology / geomatics with a Bachelor of Engineering degree programme. As long as training and studies run in parallel (2 years or 4 semesters), KIA students attend the university 2-3 days a week. The other days are spent at the company. After completing their training, they continue full-time with the five-semester specialisation course, which concludes with the Bachelor's thesis. After just 9 semesters, you will have a vocational qualification and a Bachelor's degree!

Full-time Plus

With the Full-time Plus model, you work in several authorities from the outset and also earn money. This is a degree programme with the option of a career as a civil servant. The aim of the model is to teach you the practical professional skills and knowledge required to qualify for the 1st entry-level civil servant career group 2 alongside your bachelor's degree in Land Surveying. You will complete the necessary preparatory service for this during your dual study programme. This will save you even more time.

Studying at Campus Bochum

Modern, internationally oriented, and surrounded by greenery – that's the University of Bochum. With over 8,200 students learning at two different locations – the main campus in Bochum and the external location in Heiligenhaus (CVH).

With our six departments and over 58 degree programs, we place great emphasis on encounters at eye level, a supportive community, personal guidance, and strong practical relevance. There are numerous student work and research groups where students from different programs come together for collaborative learning. Topics such as Sustainable University Bochum, project-based learning, electromobility, or climate change can be independently and closely addressed with the guidance of instructors.

You can also pursue a doctoral degree with us after obtaining a master's degree. The Bochum campus is located approximately 15 minutes by car or light rail from the city center, right next to Ruhr-University Bochum (RUB). All leisure offerings for students there are open to you as well: from university sports to the cultural café and housing options. Bochum, as a student city, has everything a student could desire: from art museums, theaters, and concert halls to a planetarium and mining museum, not to mention the vibrant nightlife in the Bermuda Triangle, city park, and Kemnader See – check it out on the map to see how green it is here!

What our students say

"After leaving school, I didn't want to have a desk job, maybe later on, I thought, and that's how I came across the profession of surveying technician. The apprenticeship I applied for was directly linked to the possibility of an integrated degree programme."

Dion Mattern, KIA-Student

"I had already completed my training as a surveying technician and wanted to continue my education. I learnt about the profession during an internship in year 10 and decided to continue my studies. What I particularly like about the degree programme is that you can combine the lecture content with the exercises and internships."
