Management for Engineering and Natural Sciences VERBUND (MBA)

A part-time further education programme that qualifies you for management tasks.

This application-oriented MBA programme (formerly: MBA Technical Business Administration) is aimed at engineers and scientists who

  • already have a successful career,
  • fulfil management tasks or would like to prepare for them and
  • are looking for a scientifically sound yet practice-orientated management education that is very compatible with their professional activities.

The aim of the Master's degree programme is to provide these prospective students with a part-time university education in business administration and to impart the management skills required for leadership tasks. In particular, the interdisciplinary interfaces between engineering and scientific activities and business management are considered.

The programme is characterised by its academic quality and high practical relevance. Students can bring experience from their everyday professional life into the programme and directly apply the knowledge gained during their studies. This results in valuable synergies between study and work.

Career prospects

Students on this degree programme expand their engineering or scientific skills profile to include

  • a broad range of sound business management knowledge,
  • the ability to make qualified decisions at management level in operational and strategic management, and
  • the social skills required for the confident management of employees.

Graduates are thus comprehensively prepared to take on management responsibility and fulfil leadership roles in various functional areas up to and including management.

With their expertise in thinking and acting in a technically/ economically integrative manner, graduates are in demand both in the business-oriented areas of marketing, sales, purchasing and controlling as well as in the technically-oriented areas of research and development, production, logistics and quality assurance. They are also ideally qualified for staff tasks in the area of project and process management.


Admission requirements

1. University entrance qualification (valid in Germany)

The prerequisite for admission to the programme is proof of a first professionally qualifying degree with a diploma or bachelor's degree

  • with an engineering or scientific orientation (with a technical or scientific proportion of the modules - excluding thesis and colloquium - of at least 75%) at a state or state-recognised university
  • with at least 180 credit points/credits 
  • with an overall grade of at least 3.0 "satisfactory"

as well as proof of

  • qualified practical professional experience of at least twelve months after the professionally qualifying degree programme.

English language skills at level B2 recommended

Programme structure

The standard period of study, including the Master's thesis, is 5 semesters (2.5 years) and concludes with the MBA (Master of Business Administration). The programme can only be started in the summer semester.

The programme is offered in cooperation with the South Westphalia University of Applied Sciences and is taught in joint courses at the Bochum and Hagen campuses.

Time structure

  • 70% self-study phases: Students on the joint degree programme work through content that is usually taught in lectures using didactically prepared learning letters, the recommended specialist literature and the additional learning materials provided on the moodle communication platform.
  • 30% attendance phases: During the attendance phases, the content acquired during the self-study phases is deepened and applied in practice. The attendance phases usually take place on Saturdays (approx. 10 dates per semester) in groups of approx. 25 students.
    Individual modules are offered as part of block seminars (one-day or multi-day events, max. 5 weekdays per semester).

Costs

The fees are €1250 per semester.


The degree programme is offered as a combined study programme. The combination of self-study and attendance components is specially designed to meet the needs of working students and enables excellent compatibility of the degree programme with career, family and familiar social environment. Admission to the programme is only possible in the summer semester.
