Prof. Dr. Wytzisk-Arens arbeitet und forscht zu Fragen der Konzeption und Implementierung von Geodateninfrastrukturen sowie zur (verteilten) Prozessierung und Analyse raumzeitvarianter Daten.

Prof. Dr. Wytzisk-Arens gestaltete die erste Fassung des Architekturkonzeptes der Geodateninfrastruktur Deutschland (GDI-DE) und leitete zahlreiche nationale und internationale Projekte, z. B. zur Integration interoperabler Geoinformationsdienste für Nahe-Echtzeitinformationen bei der Europäischen Umweltagentur (EEA), zum Aufbau einer Geodateninfrastruktur für die Europäische Kommission (INSPIRE@EC) oder zum Aufbau der Geobasiskomponenten (GeoBAK) des Freistaates Sachsen. Er konzipierte die Strategie zur Implementierung der Nationalen GDI Kroatiens und widmete sich als Key Expert im EU-finanzierten Projekt „Technical Assistance for Integrated Land Administration System“ (ILAS) sowie als Senior Short Time Expert im Projekt „INSPIRATION - Spatial Data Infrastructure in the Western Balkans“ technischen, organisatorischen und strategischen Aspekten der Entwicklung nationaler und regionaler Geodateninfrastrukturen.

Seit seiner Berufung im Jahr 2013 leitete Prof. Wytzisk-Arens verschiedene öffentlich geförderte Forschungsprojekte zur Weiterentwicklung von Methoden und Technologien der Geoinformatik im Kontext nachhaltig­keitsrelevanter Fragestellungen. Diese reichen von der Optimierung des Umweltmonitorings in der Wasserwirtschaft, über Methoden zur kommunalen Raumbeobachtung, bis hin zur vorausschauenden Erntelogistik. 

Von April 2018 bis Februar 2022 leitete Prof. Wytzisk-Arens als Dekan den Fachbereich Geodäsie. Seit März 2022 ist er Präsident der Hochschule Bochum.
